Dental Crowns, Gatineau Dentist

What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are hollow artificial teeth that are placed over an entire decayed or damaged tooth. They are designed to restore the shape, size and colour of the tooth.

We use dental crowns to strengthen broken teeth that might otherwise need to be removed. Crowns are strong and can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain and metal.

The appearance and function of a tooth covered with a crown is very similar to that of a natural tooth. If properly maintained with at-home oral health care and routine dental hygiene appointments, crowns can last 10 years or more.

When are Dental Crowns Recommended?

When a tooth is so damaged or decayed that a large portion must be removed, your dentist may use a dental crown to restore it.

Dental crowns can also be used to secure bridges, cover dental implants, or for cosmetic reasons, such as brightening a discoloured tooth.

Your dentist may also recommend a dental crown to restore a tooth after another dental procedure, such as a root canal.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Placing a dental crown requires two dental appointments. At the first appointment, we will prepare and take an impression of the tooth which will be used to create your custom crown. While your crown is being made, you may be fitted with a temporary crown.

When your crown is ready you will return for your second appointment where we will place your crown and ensure a good fit, so that your bite and jaw movements function normally.
